NEW BEDFORD \u2014\u00a0Only a few months before the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered restaurants in March 2020,\u00a0Deanna DiCorpo and her business partners opened\u00a019 Prime Tapas<\/a>. Since the pandemic, it’s been a struggle to survive for the 10-seat Fall River restaurant that opened in December 2019, she said.<\/p>\n

But now, 19 Prime Tapas is among a handful of women-owned SouthCoast restaurants to receive a\u00a0$5,000 grant from the\u00a0Massachusetts Conference for Women<\/a>, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing women in the workplace.<\/p>\n

“I’m very thankful,” said\u00a0DiCorpo. “We’re a really small business. It helped with rent, paying my chef. Everything basically.”<\/p>\n

This year, the organization awarded a total of $400,000 in $5,000\u00a0grants to 80 women-owned restaurants in the state.<\/p>\n

“It went a long way. It was definitely a big help,” DiCorpo added.<\/p>\n

In the SouthCoast, the grant was also awarded to\u00a0Spicy Lime Thai Cuisine,\u00a0Taqueria La Raza\u00a0and\u00a0Tropical Smoothie Cafe<\/a>\u00a0in New Bedford,\u00a0Country Whip Inc. in Acushnet and\u00a0Savor the Moment\u00a0cafe in Fall River.<\/p>\n

“I am overwhelmed with joy to have received the grant. It will go towards employee wages and food cost,” said\u00a0Sherri Rego, owner of Savor the Moment cafe.\u00a0“Last year, I had to take out a loan to continue to be open so this will help tremendously.”<\/p>\n
