But after this weekend&#8217;s National Toboggan Championships, that might change! A Fall River-based toboggan racing team is gunning for the gold!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 31%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First of all, what IS a toboggan?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>toboggan<\/strong> is a long, narrow, flat-bottomed sled traditionally made of wood, with the front end curved upward. It is used for sliding down snow-covered hills or specially built chutes. Unlike other sleds, toboggans typically do not have runners or steering mechanisms\u2014they rely on weight distribution and body movement for control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toboggans were originally used by Indigenous peoples in North America for transporting goods and people across snow-covered terrain. Held in <strong>Camden, Maine<\/strong>, at the <strong>Camden Snow Bowl<\/strong>, this lively competition attracts participants from across the country, often in colorful costumes and creatively named teams. Racers compete on a 400-foot-long, iced chute that ends on a frozen pond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event typically includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Divisions for two-, three-, and four-person teams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A festive atmosphere with food, music, and other winter activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A focus on fun and community spirit, making it appealing to both serious competitors and casual participants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This unique winter tradition is known for blending sportsmanship with entertainment, drawing spectators and racers alike for a weekend of excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How is this event connected to Fall River?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Last February, a Fall River-based toboggan racing team named the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chowdaheadstobogganracing\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chowdaheadstobogganracing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chowda Heads<\/a><\/strong> made waves at the 33rd Annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships, clinching 3rd place with an impressive combined time of 18.88 seconds. This year, they&#8217;ve got their sights set on gold! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by 79-year-old Donald LeBlanc, a seasoned craftsman and racer, the team has been a staple at the national championships in Camden, Maine, for the past five years. This year\u2019s event, taking place, taking place January 31 &#8211; February 2, will see over 400 teams vying for victory.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/vivafallriver.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38189 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vivafallriver.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-6.png 780w, https:\/\/vivafallriver.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-6-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 780px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>True to their name, the Chowda Heads don\u2019t just race\u2014they bring the chowder too! LeBlanc, a long-time Fall River resident, personally prepares a hearty batch of clam chowder, along with classic New England stuffies, ensuring their presence at the festival is both competitive and delicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LeBlanc\u2019s passion for tobogganing goes beyond racing. Over the years, he has handcrafted ten stunning toboggans, each named after beloved seafood staples such as the Quahog, Steamer, and Mussel. A brand-new youth team, the \u201cCup O\u2019 Chowda Heads,\u201d is being formed, adding an extra dose of charm and enthusiasm to the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team\u2019s unique blend of racing and culinary tradition has earned them features in Yankee magazine and on WCVB\u2019s Chronicle, cementing their status as a true embodiment of New England culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a fitting twist, Fall River\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetipsytoboggan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Tipsy Toboggan<\/strong><\/a> has stepped in as a sponsor, with owner Karl Pelletier joining the team in their pursuit of gold.
