The Quequechan was one of the main reasons for Fall River\u2019s powerful growth in the 19th century, as factories harnessed the river\u2019s powerful waters for industrial&nbsp;purposes. The name for the city comes from this word. Before the mills and factories, the area surrounding the Quequechan River was inhabited by the Wampanoag and other indigenous communities. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you say the word Quequechan?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Locally, the word is pronounded \u201cQuick-a-shan\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where does (did) it run? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <em>A River and Its City: The influence of the Quequechan River on the development of Fall River, Massachusetts<\/em> by Alfred J. Lima, &#8220;The river is 2 miles long, from the head at South Watuppa Pond to the dam that was built at Third Street. It has eight falls during the last half-mile as it descends over its granite bed to tidewater at Mount Hope Bay.\u201d The river features a dramatic drop, falling 130 feet within a distance of 2,300 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But what about these &#8220;falls&#8221; I keep hearing about?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The only remaining waterfall on the Quequechan River in Fall River is hidden behind mills on Anawan Street, near where it empties into the Taunton River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/vivafallriver.com\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_8769.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to see the waterfall:&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the sound of the water until you are between the Metacomet Mills and the American Printing Co. buildings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are driving, proceed west down Pocasset St. and take a right at the sloped entrance to the mill parking lot, right before the lights.
