Here\u2019s why he was here."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fall River Native and celebrity chef, Emeril Lagasse, returned to the Riv and visited some local eateries!<\/p>\n<p>By: Ashley Schuler,\u00a0<em>The Herald News<\/em>, April 22, 2024<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">FALL RIVER \u2014 It was just a typical Sunday for a few local eateries, then BAM! In walks\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldnews.com\/story\/lifestyle\/food\/2024\/03\/05\/report-fall-rivers-emeril-among-most-popular-chefs-in-us-world\/72831839007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">one of Fall River&#8217;s most famous former residents<\/a>, celebrity chef and James Beard winner Emeril Lagasse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;We were very loud on Sunday and it switched to murmurs really quickly,&#8221; said Andrew Ferreira, co-owner of\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldnews.com\/story\/business\/2023\/02\/28\/europa-pastries-coffee-shop-in-fall-river-offers-authentic-vibe\/69932146007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">Europa Pastries and Coffee Shop<\/a>, which received a surprise visit from Lagasse amid their morning rush.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The city native was in town doing research for his first Portuguese restaurant he plans to open in New Orleans late this summer. Research included a trip back to his roots for a culinary tour of popular Portuguese spots in the Providence, Fall River and New Bedford areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">He and his Emeril Group team, which manages his 10 restaurants, flew in from New Orleans on Saturday,<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldnews.com\/story\/entertainment\/dining\/2024\/04\/22\/emeril-lagasse-dines-at-o-dinis-as-research-for-his-new-34-restaurant-new-orleans\/73406493007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">\u00a0starting their tour at O Dinis in East Providence.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">During his stop at O Dinis, Lagasse spoke to restaurant owner Natalia Paiva-Neves about growing up in Fall River and cooking Portuguese dishes with his mother, Miss Hilda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">And on Sunday his entourage made their rounds in the Spindle City, which included at least two stops on Columbia Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I froze when I finally registered that it was really him. I said &#8216;This is not real, is it?'&#8221; said Ferreira, who said he did a double take upon catching Lagasse&#8217;s reflection in the mirror as he went about his daily routine of preparing coffee.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">A sweet start at Europa Pastries<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">While there, Ferreira said Lagasse educated his colleagues on Portuguese traditions and culture of the Fall River area. Ferreira, his sister Erica Couto and her husband, Kevin, then chatted with him about the pastries their bakery is most known for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">So it&#8217;s no surprise Lagasse&#8217;s Europa order included their<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldnews.com\/story\/lifestyle\/food\/2023\/03\/15\/fall-river-new-bedford-bakeries-featured-pastel-de-nata-portuguese-pastry-competition-winner-named\/70012207007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">\u00a0award-winning pastel de nata,<\/a>\u00a0or Portuguese custard cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">According to Ferreira, Lagasse wasn&#8217;t at Europa very long, taking his treats to go, but he made a lasting impression on staff and customers all the same.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;It was brief, but it was enough to be star-struck and in awe that he was here,&#8221; said Ferreira, who grew up watching Lagasse&#8217;s TV show &#8220;Emeril Live!&#8221; every day and emulating the city-born chef.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;He was super nice. Anyone that came up to him he would speak to,&#8221; Ferreira said. &#8220;<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldnews.com\/story\/entertainment\/local-celebrity\/2021\/05\/30\/fall-river-strong-10-notable-natives-rhodes-scholars-fighters-epix-emeril-stephanopoulos-morton-dean\/7487836002\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">He&#8217;s definitely considered a hometown hero<\/a>\u00a0for a lot of those people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">Taste of Portugal at Sagres<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">A bit further up the cobblestoned sidewalks of Columbia Street, Lagasse and his crew dined that same day at Sagres Restaurant, well-known for its upscale, authentic Portuguese cuisine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Victor DaSilva and his brother Manuel Ferreira, co-owners of the decades-old city staple, got a heads up about a week ago about Lagasse&#8217;s visit.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-ma-fallriver-C6490-native-article_link-news-4\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"llx\" data-x-c=\"3\" data-integralas-id-5ed26b44-f44b-d40a-1176-fcc76f55c766=\"\" data-google-query-id=\"CLKG6NX53YUDFbYqigMdnnkJsQ\">\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;Somebody called in a reservation for Emeril Lagasse and we thought it was a joke,&#8221; said DaSilva, whose disbelief dissipated as Emeril&#8217;s table of six walked in the door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The superstar chef sought a sampling of traditional Portuguese food and wines, leaving it up to DaSilva and Ferreira to order up an array of their most-loved entrees and appetizers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Lagasse&#8217;s Luso buffet at Sagres included shrimp and littleneck appetizers, followed by grilled octopus, one of Sagres&#8217; best sellers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The spread also featured two types of cod fish dishes \u2014 baked cod (bacalhau) and Bacalhau a Gomes de Sa \u2014 Carne de Porco a Alentejana (marinated pork saute\u0301ed with littlenecks and potatoes) and Sagres&#8217; signature sirloin steak, the best measure of any good Portuguese eatery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">As with any customer who comes into his restaurant, DaSilva said &#8220;you always worry about making sure everything goes right,&#8221; but he wouldn&#8217;t call the experience nerve-wracking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;They were really cool, very nice people,&#8221; said DaSilva, whose restaurant has recently drawn other familiar faces such as former Patriots players Rob Ninkovich and Matt Light. &#8220;They said they loved the food, they loved Fall River, they loved the people \u2026 and that they&#8217;d love to return.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-ma-fallriver-C6490-native-article_link-news-5\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"llx\" data-x-c=\"4\" data-integralas-id-ef2df377-541c-2cff-1a38-3ba62520e5e9=\"\" data-google-query-id=\"CLzd-eT53YUDFT3TKAUd09UDVQ\">\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">After their meal, the brothers shared a table with Lagasse, where they discussed the joys and challenges of the restaurant industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I told him the people of Fall River are very proud of him,&#8221; DaSilva said. &#8220;He&#8217;s a big ambassador for the city, and in this case Portuguese food as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">According to DaSilva, Lagasse was most gracious to the room full of excited customers and staff who exchanged words and took photos with the Fall River icon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;He was very friendly.
