{"id":25762,"date":"2024-03-04T12:36:19","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T17:36:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vivafallriver.com\/support\/?p=25762"},"modified":"2024-09-03T13:48:43","modified_gmt":"2024-09-03T17:48:43","slug":"celebrate-old-stuff-and-rich-history-at-these-museums-around-the-southcoast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vivafallriver.com\/support\/celebrate-old-stuff-and-rich-history-at-these-museums-around-the-southcoast\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate &#8216;old stuff&#8217; and rich history at these museums around the SouthCoast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldnews.com\/staff\/3645437001\/kristina-fontes\/\">Kristina Fontes<\/a>, The Herald News<br>Published March 2, 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 2, forget about whatever is&nbsp;new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That day is about the&nbsp;old&nbsp;stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it\u2019s National Old Stuff Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a day for cleaning out closets, shelves, etc., sure, but also, it\u2019s a day for revisiting old things and rediscovering forgotten treasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because those things are so much more than \u201cold stuff\u201d: They\u2019re history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History, all of it, in fact, is personal, to someone at least, whether it\u2019s on a grand or smaller scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SouthCoast has its fair share of old stuff and history, and lots of places that have made it their mission, their vocation, to celebrate those things and honor the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are just some of the places from around the SouthCoast where you can learn about some \u201cold stuff\u201d that tells the history of our communities, and how these treasures inform our present and are still relevant to us today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Antique shops<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, the SouthCoast is chock-full of antique shops. Check your local listings, and peruse all of the old stuff and quirky finds to your heart\u2019s content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Battleship Cove, Fall River<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Address<\/strong>: 5 Water St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hours<\/strong>: Friday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Closed Monday to Thursday<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Famously home of \u201cBig Mamie\u201d herself, the USS Massachusetts, Battleship Cove is known as America\u2019s Fleet Museum, and it\u2019s also home to the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., USS Lionfish, PT-617 and PT-796. They\u2019ve also got aircraft. Plus, check out the Maritime Museum, known for its Titanic exhibit and items related to the famous Fall River Line. The Maritime Museum is open Friday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., for the winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heritage State Park, Fall River<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Address<\/strong>: Davol Street<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hours<\/strong>: Open sunrise to sunset<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Explore some more of Fall River\u2019s waterfront, and dive further into the past, at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/locations\/fall-river-heritage-state-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heritage State Park<\/a>. The Visitor Center, 100 Davol St. (in the Capt. Thomas J. Hudner Jr. Memorial Building), has ongoing\u00a0exhibits, film screenings, and activities\u00a0to help visitors engage with some local history during their visit. Plus, they\u2019ve got an ongoing Storywalk series. Learn more at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/locations\/fall-river-heritage-state-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mass.gov\/locations\/fall-river-heritage-state-park<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fall River Historical Society<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Address<\/strong>: 451 Rock St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hours<\/strong>: Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Closed Saturday and Sunday<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 1921, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fall River Historical Society<\/a>&nbsp;is dedicated to preserving the history of the city and sharing it with the public. Due to a major infrastructure project, the museum and shop are currently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closed to the public<\/a>, but the museum shop is available online.
