The Boston Globe correspondent, Lauren Daley, wrote an article about the 2024 Snackdown, the friendly South Coast competition to see who makes the best sweet bread.<\/span><\/p>\n

Led by Viva Fall River and New Bedford Food Tours, the fun starts TOMORROW!! Vote for your favorite sweet bread starting February 1st!<\/span><\/p>\n

“Sweet bread lovers, it\u2019s go time.<\/p>\n

Last February, sister cities Fall River and New Bedford competed in a month-long \u201cPast\u00e9is de Nata Throw-down<\/a>\u201d to see who made the best Portuguese egg tart.<\/span><\/p>\n

(For the record:\u00a0Goulart Square Bakery\u00a0<\/a>in New Bedford won; Fall River\u2019s\u00a0Europa Coffee Shop & Pastries\u00a0<\/a>placed second, organizers report.)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The sister cities\u2019 friendly food fight went so well, organizers said, they\u2019re doing another \u2014 this time, with the whole Southcoast family.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a02024 Southcoast Snackdown<\/a>\u00a0seeks to crown the best sweet bread on the Southcoast. Voting runs Feb. 1- 29. Vote up to once per day. (Thanks to it being a leap year, you get an extra chance to vote for your favorite.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Cohosted by\u00a0New Bedford Food Tours<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Viva Fall River, the sweet snackdown is a collaborative effort to increase tourism and help restaurants during a typically slow month.<\/p>\n

\u201cBased on the success of last year\u2019s throw-down, we said, let\u2019s ask people what the next [food] should be,\u201d said Patti Rego, executive director of Viva Fall River. \u201cThe overwhelming majority\u201d of pollsters wanted sweet bread.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the 20+ bakeries on the group\u2019s online map are in Fall River and New Bedford. But know of a hole-in-the-wall in Westport or Mattapoisett? Write it in. Rego says you can vote for any Southcoast spot as long as they make their own sweet bread (no outsourcing) and are an actual store (\u201cYou can\u2019t write-in your grandmother\u2019s sweet bread\u201d).”<\/span><\/p>\n
