They\u2019re sister cities known for their Portuguese culture and food \u2014 and now they\u2019re engaging in some friendly sibling rivalry to see which has the best tart.<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting Feb. 1, it\u2019s Fall River vs. New Bedford in a friendly \u201cPast\u00e9is de Nata Throw-down<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In a collaborative effort to increase tourism and help restaurants during a typically slow month,\u00a0New Bedford Food Tours<\/a>,\u00a0Destination New Bedford,\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Viva Fall River\u00a0are cohosting the monthlong culinary contest.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the uninitiated, a pastel de nata is a traditional Portuguese egg custard \u2014 a ring of flaky pastry filled with a bright yellow custard, often a bit caramelized on top, sometimes topped with cinnamon. The name means \u201ccream pastry\u201d in Portuguese.<\/p>\n
