Eat the Landscape: A Dinner Performance

Police Athletic League 31 Franklin St, Fall River, MA, United States

Honoring CANI’S mission to connect the Islands and their diaspora, Fabric curates a special program that showcases examples of dynamic happenings in the Azorean cultural ecosystem. Conceived as a dinner-performance, participants will be invited to "eat the landscape" of the island, immersed by the sounds of four of the most prominent musicians in the archipelago, who have come together as Cavalo Marinho for this one night. The menu will be crafted by food creative Catarina Ferreira and set designed by architect Nuno Pimenta. We will have beautiful Portuguese wine and cocktails served and created by BĀS. This dinner will subvert traditional dining by inviting our guests to move around the food installation-gathering and foraging the ephemeral island as an act of communal experience. Local and imported goods from the Acores will accompany one another in a harmonious feast of traditional and contemporary dishes. We will have tables for those that need to sit and hightop rounds scattered about the room (think cocktail party!) If you have any allergies or sensitivities, please reach out to info@fabricfallriver.com so we can provide you with more detailed information of the menu as we move closer to the date. Please join us in an unforgettable night! […]

Thursday, October 10, 2024 $83 Advance | $88 Day of Show Doors 7pm | Show 8pm It's a matter of time. 50 years to be exact. And in that time Los Lobos have created an unprecedented body of work, a legacy of greatness. The numbers are staggering: 100+ gigs a year for five decades running, crossing millions of miles to rock millions of fans. And that's just at the live shows. In between they've recorded 17 studio albums, 7 live LPs, 3 compilations, 2 EPs, 2 DVDs, and contributed 40+ guest appearances on their friends' recordings — all garnering 5 Grammys, an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction, the ALMA Richie Valens Pioneer Award, NEA and Hispanic Heritage Foundation Honors, Congressional recognitions, plus countless "Keys to the City" and "Los Lobos Day" celebrations. Charlie Ballantine Trio featuring Dan Weiss

Narrows Center for the Arts 16 Anawan St., Fall River, MA

Friday, October 11, 2024 $33 Advance | $36 Day of Show Doors 7pm | Show 8pm Named as one of the top 200 living guitarists by All About Jazz Magazine, Charlie Ballantine is acclaimed as one of the finest and most versatile young guitarists on the scene today. JAZZ TIMES MAGAZINE hails his playing as “teeming with intricate grooves and maniacal precision his guitar work is both beautiful and complex” and VINTAGE GUITAR MAGAZINE described his style by stating “Jazz, rock, and folk music peacefully coexist in Charlie Ballantine’s world”. Equipped with an impressive body of original compositions on albums like “Vonnegut” and “Cold Coffee”, Ballantine also displays a great reverence for the jazz tradition through the inclusion of standards like ‘My One and Only Love’, ‘East of the Sun’ and an entire double album dedicated to the music of Thelonious Monk released September 2021. “In the vein of fellow guitarists like John Scofield, Bill Frisell and Julian Lage, Ballantine reconciles his educational background in jazz with the stylistic background of his instrument. He approaches the gratifying tonal and harmonic language of rock/roots with the groove, ambition and improvisational focus of a jazz musician” - (JAZZIZ MAGAZINE)

Fabric Arts Festival is a celebration of art, music, community, and the city of Fall River, Massachusetts. It aims to be a platform for artistic creation through a multidisciplinary program that seeks to create a cultural and communal experience.  Portuguese festas (festivals) are vibrant celebrations that bring together communities around shared rituals and traditions involving food, music, and all sorts of devotions. They are simultaneously communal, cultural, religious, and profane. There are “Festas” all over the world, each reflecting the unique culture, traditions, and heritage of their respective regions. Fabric is hosting its own festa, expanding to multiple communities, and transforming the P.A.L. into a collective kitchen and food court with a dance floor in its center. Pedro Mafama would steer the party with his pimba (pop) hits, which reinterpret Portuguese aesthetics while, at the same time, paying attention to and acknowledging African and Islamic influences.
