Pompeii’s Final Day – AuthorTalk

Fall River Public Library 104 North Main St, Fall River, MA

Pompeii’s Final Day: The 79 AD Eruption of Italy’s Mt. Vesuvius Join author and world traveler Matt Davis for a unique look at one of the greatest disasters in history. Matt will describe the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79AD, how the cities were rediscovered almost 1500 years later, and the risks still facing metropolitan Naples today. Matt Davis is a retired Professor of Psychology who conducted the first research studies of how residents living in beneath Italy’s Mt. Vesuvius view their risk from a future eruption. He’s been an invited speaker at dozens of international conferences and was a featured expert in the 2006 Discovery Channel documentary: Could It Happen Here? He's the author of At Home in the World: Reflections of a Travel Addict, a memoir about his international travels, and is a regular guest on WJAR TV's Studio 10 program in Providence. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Fall River Public Library. Copies of Matt's book will be available for sale at the event ($20, cash or check only).

Eat the Landscape: A Dinner Performance

Police Athletic League 31 Franklin St, Fall River, MA, United States

Honoring CANI’S mission to connect the Islands and their diaspora, Fabric curates a special program that showcases examples of dynamic happenings in the Azorean cultural ecosystem. Conceived as a dinner-performance, participants will be invited to "eat the landscape" of the island, immersed by the sounds of four of the most prominent musicians in the archipelago, who have come together as Cavalo Marinho for this one night. The menu will be crafted by food creative Catarina Ferreira and set designed by architect Nuno Pimenta. We will have beautiful Portuguese wine and cocktails served and created by BAÌ„S. This dinner will subvert traditional dining by inviting our guests to move around the food installation-gathering and foraging the ephemeral island as an act of communal experience. Local and imported goods from the Acores will accompany one another in a harmonious feast of traditional and contemporary dishes. We will have tables for those that need to sit and hightop rounds scattered about the room (think cocktail party!) If you have any allergies or sensitivities, please reach out to info@fabricfallriver.com so we can provide you with more detailed information of the menu as we move closer to the date. Please join us in an unforgettable night! […]
