‘Roadfood’s’ Misha Collins Visits New Bedford & Fall River

“Roadfood” host Misha Collins said he was stunned by the beauty of New Bedford while filming an episode in the Whaling City in October.

“There’s so many fishing vessels in here. Each one of them is painted with an eye of an artist… they’re actually beautiful,” Collins said in a promo video.

During the filming, while walking along the harbor, a fisherman named “Bob” invited Collins and his crew onto his boat to take a tour of the harbor.

“So, as far as we know right now, we’re being abducted,” the “Supernatural” actor-turned “Roadfood” host jokingly said.

“There is such a long and storied history here. You can kind of feel it. It’s palpable. It’s not a graveyard, but these are monuments to another time.”

“Roadfood” follows Collins as he travels the country and learns about the different areas through its food. Two episodes were shot in New England.

When is the Roadfood New Bedford episode airing

The “Rhode Island” episode of Roadfood is available to stream now on GBH, PBS Passport, Amazon, or AppleTV. The “New Bedford” episode, which also includes Fall River, is premiering on Feb. 19.

What restaurants did Roadfood visit in New Bedford

In New Bedford, after Collins’ boat ride in the harbor, he met up with Cassie Canastra, the director of operations for BASE, Inc., and is on the groundfish and scallop advisory panels for the New England Fisheries Management Council.

Canastra gave Collins a tour of her family-run business before they both headed into downtown New Bedford to visit Tia Maria’s European Cafe.

“When they initially had called me, I thought they wanted to just use our space to conduct an interview,” said Tia Maria’s owner Jessica Arruda. “I didn’t realize that we would be featured on the show. It was a pleasant surprise.”

She said they were in the middle of a “lunch rush” when the camera crew of 10 people, including Collins, arrived. Collins filmed the segment at an outside table in the parklet.

“We chatted a lot. We introduced them to some of our customer favorites,” Arruda said of items such as the Queijo São Jorge sandwich and Galão, a steamed milk with an espresso shot.

Roadfoods features Portuguese food

“We tried to serve him all Portuguese stuff,” she added.

Arruda said they spoke in great length about the whaling and textile industry and how influential the Portuguese people are to the success of the city.

Collins also visited the Whaling Museum, fisheries and other local places. “It was nice to have New Bedford featured in such a positive light,” Arruda added.

Collins is best known for his role as Castiel in the TV series “Supernatural.” He’s also known for playing Officer Franklin in “TSA America” and for his appearances in Fox’s “24.” Presently, Collins voices the role of folklore professor Jeremy Bradshaw in the podcast, “Bridgewater.”
