What does the Mayflower Wind announcement mean for the Fall River area?

FALL RIVER — The Fall River area got some good news Friday afternoon with the announcement that Mayflower Wind had been awarded a 400 megawatt power purchase agreement to develop an offshore wind farm 20 miles south of Nantucket.

The Boston-based wind-industry developer — which is part of joint venture between Shell Oil Company and European offshore wind developer Ocean Winds — had previously been awarded an 804 megawatt purchase agreement in October 2019.

The company says those first 804 megawatts of the 1,204 megawatt total will be delivered by the mid 2020s and have the capacity to generate clean-energy electricity to half a million homes and businesses. Mayflower’s competitor, Vineyard Wind LLC, was awarded the lion’s share of 1,200 megawatts of the 1,600 megawatt proposal.

Vineyard Wind last month started construction of its own 800-megawatt wind turbine project on its lease portion of the same government-owned offshore area. It now has the green light to eventually produce up to 2,000 megawatts.
