Love is in the air, and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Whether you’re in a new relationship, celebrating years of partnership, or planning a Galentine’s date with a friend, there’s no shortage of ways to acknowledge the holiday.
Looking to switch up the normal dinner-and-roses routine? In this blog post, we’ll explore a variety of creative and memorable ideas to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Fall River!
Book a Ghost Tour or Overnight Stay at the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast
Does your typical date night involve watching a scary movie, or enjoying a true crime documentary? This time, immerse yourself in the mystery by taking a trip to Fall River’s Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast – the site of one of America’s most notorious unsolved murders. Explore the Victorian home on one of their guided tours, or, if you’re brave, book an overnight stay in one of their guest rooms. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, a visit to the Lizzie Borden house promises shared thrills and memorable moments that will linger long after Valentine’s Day!
Stumpy’s Ax Throwing
Featuring an iconic mural of Miss Lizzie Borden herself, Stumpy’s is a favorite year-round recreational spot for residents and visitors who frequent Fall River’s nearby breweries and marina. Get out any relationship frustrations with a fun and casual night of ax throwing in Stumpy’s state-of-the-art facility. Their BYOB policy means that you can bring the romance right to the throwing pit – nothing says romance like wine, roses and axes!
Grab a Brew at Troy City Brewing & Canned Heat Brewery
If you’re going to Stumpy’s, you can pick up a six pack of locally brewed ales at one of the two breweries in the area. That being said, their laid-back, cozy ambience makes it hard to just pick up a six pack to go. Nestled in two formerly industrial buildings, Troy City Brewing and Canned Heat Brewery allow you to experience Fall River’s historic charm in a whole new way. Bring a deck of cards or check out their collections of board games. Try a flight or visit both breweries to compare (they’re only a five minute drive apart)– you may just learn something new about your taste in beer, or about your partner!
Dinner & a Movie at Fall River Picture Show
Looking for a more traditional Valentine’s activity? This February, there’s a lot on offer at the Picture Show movie theater at Fall River’s SouthCoast Market Place, a plaza with a number of other stores and dining options to peruse before your movie. Around Valentine’s Day, you can expect the musical Mean Girls, the spy-thriller Argyle, and (of course!) the rom-com Anyone But You, to still be in theaters. Valentine’s Day is also the opening day for Bob Marley: One Love, a touching biopic about the iconic reggae singer, and Madame Web, the newest Marvel flick. Grab some popcorn and some wine from the theater’s bar, and you have yourself the perfect date night!
“Exercise” Your Love For Each Other
Whether you and your loved one are pursuing a New Year’s resolution together, or are just looking to try something new, Fall River has a number of fun options to stay active together! Feeling sporty? Consider renting out a cage at Hauss Powa Batting Cages. Tackle a new workout class together at one of Fall River’s many gyms and boot camps, which offer classes for all skill levels. For a more relaxing experience, check out Fall River’s yoga studios- Troy City Yoga, Divine Yoga and Sanctuary Wellness Studio. Sanctuary Wellness is also home to the Blue Lotus Spa, making it easy to couple your relaxing yoga class with a facial or massage!
Get Outside!
For those brave enough to venture outdoors in the New England winter, Fall River has a number of outdoor destinations for a Valentine’s Day stroll. On the Eastern side of the Watuppa Pond, you will find the Copicut Woods, acres of untouched forestland perfect for hiking. The Alfred J. Lima Quequechan River Rail Trail is accessible from downtown Fall River and showcases the area’s natural wetlands alongside epic displays of street art. If there’s not too much of a wind chill off the river, enjoy the waterfront boardwalk starting from Heritage State Park on Davol Street. The boardwalk connects walkers to the museums at Battleship Cove, Fall River’s historic carousel, the military monuments of Veterans Memorial Bicentennial Park, and free exhibits inside the Heritage State Park visitor center. For more information on trails and outdoor activities, visit our full Recreation page.
Peruse Fall River’s Beloved Art Galleries
For those looking to enjoy some fine art on this holiday, Fall River has multiple museums and gallery spaces that showcaseart for free! The Narrows Center for the Arts has two art galleries which are open to the public during their box office hours, noon to 5pm on Thursday through Sunday. For those unfamiliar with the Narrows, it is best known as a performance space, and concerts are scheduled for the Saturday night before Valentine’s Day, along with the Friday & Saturday after. The Grimshaw Gudewicz Art Gallery will also be showing their latest show, titled A Confluence of Place and Space, during their normal hours Monday–Thursday: 10 am–4 pm and Friday: 10 am–1 pm.
No Babysitter? No Problem!
Want to include the kiddos in the Valentine’s Day fun? The Fall River Children’s Museum is a great option! On February 11th, the The Old Colony & Fall River Railroad Museum will be on-site running their impressive collection of model trains. The Fall River Public Library’s Children’s Room is also hosting a Valentine’s themed crafting event for kids from 3:30-5pm on the 14th . Share the love with the whole family- young and old!
